Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Freshman Margot Spatola led the Eagles with five points on five goals as the Eagles fell to the University of Connecticut Huskies on Wednesday night, 13-10. Despite going on a 4-1 run in the last eight and half minutes of the game, the Eagles were unable to contain the Husky offense for the rest of the game. This marks Spatola's third five point game of the season. The Eagles fall to 6-5 overall and will host their first home ACC game on Sunday, April 9, as they host the Virginia Tech Hokies at 1 p.m.
The Huskies took an early, 3-0 lead until 17:44 in the first half when senior tri-captain Elizabeth Kadison notched her lone goal of the game, bringing the Eagles within two. Freshman Maura Mahoney scored next at 13:21, bringing the score within one at 3-2.
But the scoring would continue to go back and forth as Spatola notched the first two of her game-high five goals in between two Connecticut goals by Janet Williams and Abbey VanDeusen. Spatola first took the ball from classmate Jenna McCabe then scored six minutes later on a free-position shot. The two team entered halftime with the score, 6-4, in the Huskies favor.
UConn opened scoring in the second half as well with Whitney Michele taking a pass from VanDeusen to put the Huskies up by three. Spatola answered right back on an unassisted goal at 25:54. Connecticut would go on to score three straight goals in a five minute span to put the Huskies up by six at 12-6. Sophomore Caitlin Swift and Spatola scored within a minute of each other to cut Connecticut's lead to four as Swift notched her first goal of the season. Junior Claire Bowersox got in the scoring mix as well two minutes later as she got the assist from freshman Katie DeBlois putting the Eagles within three with 5:51 left in the game. But Connecticut did not let the game get closer than three goals at the end of the game, as Kristin Link sealed the win with a goal at 4:48 in the half.
The Eagles managed to slip one more goal past goalie Kristen Haldeman with three seconds left as McCabe got credit for the score, but it was not enough as time expired and the score stood at 13-10.
Sophomore Courtney Zwirko made five saves in 52 minutes played.
The Eagles host the Virginia Tech Hokies in their home ACC opener on April, 9 at 1 p.m.
