Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College softball team handed the University of Maine its 14th loss of the season with a 9-7 victory at BC's Shea Field on April 13. The Eagles scored six runs in the fifth inning to take the lead, and Jenna Macchi led Boston College while going 2-for-4, collecting three RBIs and four assists. The Eagles improve to 16-17 on the season, while Maine falls to 24-14.
Maine opened up the scoring in the first inning on an Ashley Waters homerun to right field. In the top of the second inning, the Eagles got out of a bases loaded jam by tagging Maine's Molly McKinney out at the plate. Tara Vilardo and Erin Provost popped out to end the inning.
The Black Bears extended their lead to three with a homerun in the top of the third by Brittany Cheney, driving in Ashley Waters. The infield trio of Jenna Macchi, Renee Ramos and Elena Ferrero turned a quick double play to end the inning. Britney Thompson came into pitch in the fourth frame, allowing no hits.
The Eagles got their first two hits of the game in the bottom of the fourth with Kristin Allain and Macchi singling to left and center field. Ashley Obrest advanced Allain and Macchi to second and third, and Renee Ramos singled to right field scoring both.
In the top of the fifth inning, with runners on first and second, Amy Kuhl hit into a double as Macchi, Ramos and Ferrero turned the play again to end the inning.
In the bottom half of the fifth the Eagles' bats came alive. With the bases loaded Macchi unleashed a double to center field to drive in Hopkin and Booth and begin the Boston College rally. Ashley Obrest's double to left field drove in Macchi. Obrest advanced to third on a passed ball and Ramos walked to put runners on first and third. Ferrero singled and advanced to second on throw, driving in Ramos and Obrest.
The Black Bears closed the gap in the top of the sixth with a three-run home run by Erin Provost. However the Eagles extended their lead to two in the bottom half of the inning as Anne Filer reached on a walk. Amanda Booth replaced Filer on first place and advanced to second and third on two consecutive ground outs. Booth reached home on an error at second base to round out the scoring.
The Eagles return to action this weekend as they travel to Georgia Tech in a three-game weekend series. Game one is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
