CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. Junior forward Brian Boyle scored two goals as ninth-ranked Boston College and No. 12 New Hampshire battled to a 3-3 overtime tie before 7,884 fans in Kelley Rink.
The tie thwarted league-leading Boston College's effort to secure a share of the Hockey East regular-season title. BC, which entered the season's final two games needing two points to clinch the top spot, will now try to earn its fourth consecutive league crown when it travels to UNH (17-11-7, 13-7-6 HE) on Saturday night.
Boyle opened the scoring at 3:58 of the first period, tipping freshman Brett Motherwell's shot from point past New Hampshire goaltender Kevin Regan. UNH tied the game on freshman Trevor Smith's power-play goal at 17:04, and took a 2-1 lead on junior Jacob Micflikier's goal at 1:37 of the second period.
Sophomore Dan Bertram drew the host Eagles even just 45 seconds later. Boyle put BC on top with a man-advantage goal at 6:36 before Andrew Leach notched the third-period game-tying tally at 3:11 for UNH.
BC sophomore goalie Cory Schneider equaled his career high with 43 saves.
Regan made 40 stops, including four in overtime.
