Six Players Capture Hockey East Honors

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior forward Chris Collins has earned Hockey East Player of the Year honors and senior captain Peter Harrold has captured the league's Best Defensive Defenseman award, according to an announcement made at the league's annual pre-tournament banquet at the Royal Sonesta in Cambridge.
In addition, four more Boston College players captured All-League accolades. Junior forward Brian Boyle joined Collins and Harrold as All-League first team selections. Sophomore goaltender Cory Schneider captured All-Hockey East second team honors, while freshman forward Benn Ferriero and freshman defenseman Brett Motherwell earned All-Rookie Team honors.
Collins, who leads the country in points per game (1.58), enters the tournament's semifinal round as the league's top scorer with 57 points - 30 goals and 27 assists. His goal total ranks third nationally. Earlier this season, he became the 64th player to join Boston College's 100-point club. In 156 games, Collins has tallied 116 points on 59 goals and 57 assists.
Collins is the ninth Boston College player to capture the league's Player of the Year award. The previous recipients are: Scott Harlow (1986), Brian Leetch (1987), Greg Brown (1989 and 1990), David Emma (1991), Mike Mottau (2000), Brian Gionta (2001), Ben Eaves (2003) and Patrick Eaves (2005).
Harrold has 29 points - seven goals and 22 assists - in 36 games this season. He enters the tournament's semifinal round having recorded at least one point in 12 of BC's last 13 games, including the game-winning goal in overtime in the team's second game of the Hockey East quarterfinal round. He is the fourth BC player to earn the league's Best Defensive Defenseman award. The previous recipients include: Mike Mottau (2000), Bobby Allen (2001) and Andrew Alberts (2004).
Boyle has 46 points - 20 goals and 26 assists - in 26 games this season. In 27 league games, he tallied 33 points, including 18 goals. His point total ranked second. Last March, Boyle captured Hockey East Tournament MVP honors after tallying four goals and two assists in four tournament games.
Schneider enters the tournament's semifinal round with a 20-11-2 record, a 2.20 goals against average and a .924 save percentage. In 26 Hockey East games, he tallied a 16-8-2 record and league-best 1.96 GAA. He tallied six shutouts in league play, which broke the school's single-season record and established a Hockey East record.
Ferriero is the Eagles' third-leading goal scorer with 12 goals and has tallied 18 points in 36 games this season. He tallied 17 points - 11 goals and six assists - in 27 league games.
Motherwell has 20 points - three goals and 17 assists - in 33 games this season. He ranks fifth on the team in assists. Motherwell enters the tournament's semifinal round with six points in the last six games.
Boston College (22-11-3) faces Maine in the semifinal round of the Hockey Tournament on Friday, March 17. Game time is 8 p.m. in Boston's TD Banknorth Garden.
