CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior forward Brian Boyle registered a hat trick and sophomore goalie Cory Schneider recorded his sixth shutout of the season to lead league-leading Boston College to a 6-0 Hockey East win over UMass-Lowell before 5,408 fans in Kelley Rink.
Boyle has now scored seven goals in two games against UMass-Lowell (11-18-1, 8-14-2 Hockey East) this season. The 6-foot-7-inch junior tallied all four BC goals in the Eagles' 4-3 overtime win at UMass-Lowell on Jan. 28. The two teams will meet for the third and final time on Saturday, Feb. 25 in Lowell's Tsongas Rink.
Boston College (20-9-2, 17-6-1 HE) led 1-0 after one period and 3-0 after two periods, before securing the victory with three third-period goals.
Boyle opened the night's scoring just 69 seconds into the contest. Freshman Benn Ferriero doubled the BC margin at 2:11 of the middle period, before Boyle netted his second goal of the game - on the power play - at 13:43.
Sophomore Matt Greene gave BC a 4-0 lead at 5:49 of the third period. Classmate Dan Bertram scored at 10:07, before Boyle capped his three-goal night at 10:20.
Schneider earned his 18th win of the season, making 26 saves, including 12 in the second period. His six shutouts shatter the school's single-season record. The mark had been held by current New Jersey Devils goalie Scott Clemmensen, who totaled five shutouts during the 1999-2000 season.
UMass-Lowell sophomore Peter Vetri made 23 saves in 50:20, before being replaced by freshman Vinny Monaco, who finished with four stops.
