
Women's Ice Hockey Tops No. 9 Providence

Providence, R.I. - The women's ice hockey team topped No. 9 Providence College, 4-1, at Providence's Schneider Arena Saturday afternoon. Freshman Maggie Taverna scored the gamewinner on a short-handed goal as the Eagles now stand at 17-9-4 and 14-3-1 in Hockey East play. The Eagles have clinched a playoff berth and will be participating in the Hockey East playoffs for the second time in the program's history.
In the first period, Jill McInnis scored the game's first goal at 2:17 as the senior notched her fifth goal of season on a power-play goal assisted by freshmen Becky Zavisza and Brie Baskin.
At almost the end of the first period, Taverna received the puck on a BC break away and netted a short-hander at 19:58. This was her second short-handed goal of the season. Sophomore Sarah Feldman assisted on the play which gave the Eagles a 2-0 cushion at the end of the first period. Feldman has now tallied at least one point in the last four games for the Eagles.
In the second period, the Eagles scored again as Zavisza netted her 14th goal of the season on with a power-play goal assisted by McInnis and sophomore Lindsay Wright at 11:38 to put BC up, 3-0.
The Friars scored at 17:22 in the third period as junior Sonny Watrous recorded the score. Providence pulled their goalie for an extra attacker as senior Ashley Payton notched her 18th assist of the season.
Boston College continued to stay on the offensive side of the puck as freshman Meghan Fardelmann recorded her ninth goal of the season at 17:42 in the third period. Feldman earned her second assist of the game on the play.
Senior goalie Alison Quandt made 17 saves in the game while Friar's goalie, Jana Bugden recorded 16 saves in net.
The two teams will face off again tomorrow as they finish their regular-season series. Boston College will host the Friars tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Kelley Rink as they play its last home game of the season.
