CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior Brian Boyle scored two goals to lead sixth-ranked Boston College to a 5-2 Hockey East win over Massachusetts before 5,447 fans in Kelley Rink.
Sophomores Brock Bradford and Nathan Gerbe each tallied one goal and one assist for the victors. Classmate Anthony Aiello totaled two assists.
BC led 2-1 after one period and 3-2 after two periods, before clinching the victory with two goals in the first 86 seconds of the final frame.
Gerbe opened the scoring just 48 seconds into the contest and Boyle doubled the BC advantage at 17:36. UMass sophomore Chris Davis cut the lead to 2-1 with a power-play goal at 18:42.
Junior Pat Gannon netted his first goal of the season at 6:14 of the second period to give BC a 3-1 cushion. UMass (8-5-2, 5-4-1 Hockey East) answered on P.J. Fenton's power-play goal at 9:00.
Boston College (9-5-1, 6-3-1 HE) secured the victory with two quick goals to open the third period. Boyle scored just 50 seconds into the period, deflecting an Anthony Aiello shot attempt from the left point. Sophomore Brock Bradford completed the night's scoring just 36 seconds later, taking a sharp pass from Gerbe from the left side and beating UMass goalie Jon Quick.
Quick finished with 44 saves, while BC junior goalie Cory Schneider stopped 22 shots.
Game Notes: Boyle's two-goal effort marked his second multiple-goal outing of the season and 10th of his career ... Aiello's two assists marked his first collegiate multiple-point performance ... Freshman forward Matt Lombardi recorded his first career point - an assist - on Gannon's goal at 16:14 of the second period ... The team returns to action on Jan. 5, 2007 at Northeastern. During the Eagles' midseason break, Nathan Gerbe will travel to Leksand and Mora, Sweden as a member of the U.S. National Junior Team to compete in the World Junior Championships (Dec. 26 - Jan. 5), while Dan Bertram will travel home to Calgary, Alberta, to participate in Canada's National Junior Selection Camp from Dec. 10-15. Canada's National Junior Team roster will be announced on Friday, Dec. 15. Gerbe and Bertram both participated in the World Junior Championships last winter.
