BOSTON - Junior goaltender Cory Schneider made 34 saves and Boston College was the recipient of a puck that bounced in its favor for the game's only goal as the seventh-ranked Eagles earned a 1-0 Hockey East victory over Boston University before 6,244 fans in Agganis Arena.
Schneider stopped 12 shots in the first period, 13 in the second and 9 in the final frame to guide the Eagles to the shutout victory, their second shutout in as many meetings between the teams.
Last March, Schneider stopped all 28 shots in the team's 5-0 victory over BU in the 2006 Northeast Regional final in Worcester, Mass.
BU senior goalie John Curry stopped 22 of 23 BC shots.
The Eagles (8-4-1, 5-2-1 Hockey East) got the game's lone goal at 3:17 of the first period.
In a shorthanded situation, sophomore forward Nathan Gerbe cleared the puck the length of the ice. After Curry gathered it along the boards, the puck was picked up by defenseman Kevin Shaeffer, who passed it teammate Pete MacArthur behind the BU net. The puck caromed off MacArthur's stick, then bounced off Curry's skate and into the net for the own goal.
Gerbe was credited with the score, his team-high seventh goal - and second shorthanded tally - of the season.
Both teams had numerous scoring opportunities through the game but failed to convert.
At 9:45 of the first period, senior Joe Rooney hit the left post on a shorthanded opportunity. Early in the middle period, Gerbe's shot from the left circle sailed past Curry's left shoulder and hit the cross bar. Later on in the period, Andrew Orpik broke into the BU zone with a 3-on-1 and passed to Brian O'Hanley in the slot. Curry saved the O'Hanley shot and stopped Pat Gannon's rebound bid. With less than one minute in the second period, Benn Ferriero beat one BU defenseman along the right side for a prime scoring opportunity that Curry stopped to preserve the score.
Boston University's last chance came with 2:07 left in regulation when Gerbe was penalized for hooking. Shortly thereafter (with 1:30 on the clock), BU pulled Curry for the two-man advantage. But the visiting Eagles held on for the victory.
The host Terriers (5-3-5, 4-3-1 Hockey East) outshot the Eagles, 34-23, including a 13-7 advantage in the second period and a 9-3 margin in the third.
Gerbe accounted for one-third of the team's shots, tallying a game-high eight.
With 5-0 and 1-0 shutouts in each of the previous two meetings, BC has now shutout BU eight times in series history. Additionally, the back-to-back shutouts mark the first time in the 234-game series history that either club has posted shutouts on consecutive meetings.
