Blacksburg, Va. - After losing both home matches last weekend, the Eagles hit the road looking to get back on track with a win, and that's exactly what they got as they held off the Hokies of Virginia Tech for a close five-set win last night. The win improves BC's record to 6-8 in ACC action.
The Eagles took the first two games by scores of 30-25 and 30-26, but Virginia Tech fought back as the Eagles would drop games three and four by the same score of 30-22, before holding on for the critical final game of the match 16-14.
Game one would feature 10 tie scores but BC would break a 20-20 tie winning three straight points to take a 23-20 advantage. A service ace by freshman Michelle Lang pulled the Hokies to within one but BC strung together three, three-point runs to close out game one 30-25.
The two teams traded leads four times early in the start of game two before junior Kelsey Johnson landed back-to-back kills for BC. Sophomore Sarah Munoz responded for the Hokies landing back-to-back kills as well, to keep the game tied at 22. But, the Eagles broke away on an 8-4 run to close out game two 30-26, giving them a two game advantage.
In game three, Virginia Tech broke out to an early lead 7-1 lead after kills by Allie Kupec and Taylor Parrish. The Eagles fought back, though, as they cut the Hokies lead to one, 16-15, after a kill by senior Dorota Niemczewska. But, Tech would force a fourth game, closing out game three on a 12-5 run, for a 30-22 win.
With the game tied at 15-15, the Hokies would go on a 10-2 run in game four and close out BC, 30-22 to force a decisive game five.
The Hokies opened game five leading 4-0, but were unable to hold on as the Eagles fought to even the score at 13-13 after an attacking error on Virginia Tech. Taylor Parrish gave the Hokies the first match point opportunity at 14-13, but Abigail Hasebroock's kill for BC tied the score at 14-14. The Eagles held on to win the final two consecutive points for the game, giving them an exciting 16-14 victory.
Freshman Taylor Parrish led the Virginia Tech attack with a career-high 24 kills. Sophomore Sarah Muñoz and freshman Michelle Lang also played very well each recording double-doubles for the Hokies.
The Eagles got strong performances from junior Kelsey Johnson and senior Dorota Niemczewska. Johnson led the Eagles with a team-high 20 kills while adding 12 digs. Niemczewska also recorded a double-double with her 14 kills and 13 digs.
BC will look to stay on the winning track as they take on the Cavaliers of Virginia, Saturday, November 4 at 5:00 p.m.
