Charlottesville, Va. - Less than 24 hours after defeating the Hokies of Virginia Tech, the Eagles met a tough Virginia team and dropped a 3-0 decision tonight in Charlottesville. The loss drops BC to 6-9 in conference while the Cavaliers improve to an impressive 12-4 in ACC play.
After a few early tie scores in game one, Virginia would rally to win eight of 10 points to take a 13-7 lead, after an ace by Sarah Kirkwood. BC would close to within 13-8, but that would be as close as they would get as the Cavaliers gradually pulled away for the 30-20 game one win.
Despite trailing 10-4 early in game two, the Eagles fought back and closed to within two, 18-16, after a block assist by senior Shardai Davis and junior Kelsey Johnson. BC would tie the score 23-23, after a Dorota Niemczewska kill, but Virginia would not falter wining seven of the last nine points to win an important game two, 30-25.
The Eagles would jump out quickly in game three to an early 7-1 lead. However, the Cavaliers would rally in a big way, winning 14 of the next 19 points to take a 15-12 lead. Virginia would increase their lead to 19-14 but BC would close back to within two, 20-18 after an attacking error on the Cavaliers. But, the Eagles could not capitalize as Virginia would close out the game and the match with a 10-3 run.
Virginia was led by junior Sarah Kirkwood who tallied 15 kills. Sister Emily Kirkwood also played well posting a match-high 37 assists. The Eagles were led by junior Kelsey Johnson who posted another double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs. Senior Allison Anderson led the defensive attack with a match-high 18 digs.
The Eagles travel to College Park, Md. on Tuesday, November 7 where they will take on the University of Maryland at 6:00 p.m.
