Chestnut Hill, Mass.--The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) named two Boston College forwards, sophomore Bob Dirks (Malden, Netherlands) and junior Crystal Frates (Woodstock, VT), as All-Americans earlier on Monday. Dirks received first-team honors while Frates was selected for the third-team.
Dirks finished the season leading the ACC in goals (19), goals per game (0.95), and shots per game (4.55), and recorded 42 points in 20 games to lead the team in scoring. She also led the conference with six game-winning goals. Dirks received multiple other post-season honors, including ACC Offensive Player of the Year, All-ACC Team recognition, and first-team Northeast All-Region accolades.
Frates started in all 20 games for the Eagles, tallying 14 goals and seven points for 35 points. Twice she recorded points in five-straight games this season and twice more she notched two goals in one game (against Holy Cross and Quinnipiac). The junior finished in the ACC's top 10 in goals, goals per game, points and points per game. Frates was also selected to the Northeast All-Region first-team earlier this month.
The Eagles finished ninth in the final NFHCA Division I Poll of 2006 and was ranked as high as fourth on October 3, the program's highest ranking ever. The Eagles fell in the first round of the ACC Championship to Virginia, 2-1, and narrowly missed an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2002. Boston College finished with a 14-6 overall record in head coach Ainslee Lamb's second season at The Heights.
