Chapel Hill, N.C.--The seventh-ranked Boston College field hockey team bowed out of the ACC Championship quarterfinals with a 2-1 loss to the 10th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers on the campus of the University of North Carolina. Freshman Chelsey Feole scored the Eagles' lone goal of the game in the second half. Boston College drops to 14-6 on the season while Virginia will continue on to the semifinals Friday versus Maryland.
With 12:25 on the clock in the first half, Virginia took their seventh penalty corner of the game which resulted in a penalty stroke for Inge Kaars Sijpesteijn. Kaars Sijpesteijn beat sophomore goalie Julia Berkowitz high to her right to give the Cavs a 1-0 lead.
Late in the half, freshman Chelsey Feole took a breakaway up from midfield and went one-on-one with Virginia goalkeeper Katherine Blair. By the time Feole had the opportunity to take the shot, Blair had come out to reduce the angle and was able to make a solid save with her pads.
Virginia converted another penalty corner to take a two goal lead with 26:23 on the clock in the second half. Biffy Cornelison pushed the ball in to Abby Taylor who stick-stopped the ball for Kaars Sijpesteijn's shot and score. Boston College responded a minute later, also on a penalty corner. Junior Crystal Frates pushed the ball in and senior captain Lauren Parks took the initial shot. Feole deflected the shot past Blair to half UVa's lead and for her third goal of the season.
At 55:00, Virginia had two attackers in front of Berkowitz and an opportunity to make the score 3-1. As Berkowitz stepped out to face one Cavalier, sophomore defender Kelley Smith stepped in to make the defensive save on Lindsay O'Bannon's shot. Later in Boston College's offensive end, senior Caitlin Gillen fed a pass in front of Blair to Feole, but the goalie stuffed the freshman's shot.
The NCAA Tournament selection show will be broadcast on CSTV on Tuesday, November 7 at 7:30 p.m. and will determine whether the Eagles will continue the 2006 season
