Chestnut Hill, Mass.--The Northeast Division I All-Region Team featured five Eagles for the third straight year as announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) earlier today. Sophomore forward Bob Dirks, midfielder Katie Quaglia, and junior forward Crystal Frates each earned first-team nods while senior back Lauren Parks and sophomore goalkeeper Julia Berkowitz received second-team honors.
Dirks (Malden, Netherlands) leads the ACC in goals (19), goals per game (0.95), and shots per game (4.55), and recorded 42 points in 20 games to lead the team in scoring. She was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Year and a member of the All-ACC Team. Dirks was selected to the Northeast All-Region first-team last year as a freshman.
Quaglia (Los Altos, Calif.) tallied 15 assists, ranked among the top five in the country week-after-week, in 20 games played and started this season. Quaglia recorded multiple-assist games five times in 2006, including a three assist effort on October 25 against UConn. The midfielder was named to the All-ACC Tournament Team.
Frates (Woodstock, Vt.) started in all 20 games for the Eagles, tallying 14 goals and seven points for 35 points. Twice she recorded points in five-straight games this season and twice more she notched two goals in one game (against Holy Cross and Quinnipiac). Frates was selected to the Northeast All-Region second-team last year as a sophomore.
Parks (Norwood, Mass.) was named to the Division I Senior All-Star Game to be played later this month by the NFHCA and was voted 2006 team captain unanimously by her teammates. This defender scored five goals and recorded three assists for 13 points. Parks was a vital part of the defensive and offensive penalty corner teams for the Eagles over the past three seasons.
Berkowitz (Amherst, Mass.) was the only Eagle to be awarded as an ACC Player of the Week this season after her 15 save effort in a 2-1 double overtime upset over Duke on September 30. She played every minute in goal for Boston College, recorded six shutouts, and finished the season with a 1. 71 GAA and .743 save percentage. Berkowitz was one of two goalies named to the All-ACC Team.
The Boston College field hockey team finished ninth in the final NFHCA Division I Poll of 2006 and was ranked as high as fourth on October 3, the program's highest ranking ever. The Eagles fell in the first round of the ACC Championship to Virginia, 2-1, and narrowly missed an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2002. Boston College finished with a 14-6 overall record.
