Chestnut Hill, Mass.--The Boston College field hockey team earned its highest-ever ranking in this week's STX/NFHCA Division I Coaches' Poll at the number four spot. The previous high was sixth-place during two consecutive weeks in October, 1998. The 2-1 double overtime win over then-fourth-ranked Duke on Saturday and a 9-0 burst of offense against Appalachian State on Sunday led to the leap up from seventh-place last week.
All six ACC teams have occupied a spot in the top 10 for four consecutive weeks now. Reigning national champion Maryland (12-0) sits in first, with Wake Forest (11-1) not far behind in second. Third-ranked Old Dominion (11-1) breaks up the ACC trend before Boston College, Duke (8-3), and North Carolina (9-4) continue in the 4-5-6 spots. Ninth-ranked Virginia (8-4) rounds out the ACC teams.
The Eagles (10-2, 2-1 ACC) are 4-2 against ranked opponents this year, only losing to No. 1 Maryland--the only undefeated team left in the country--and seventh-ranked Ohio State. They rank in the top 15 nationally as a team in scoring average, goals scored per game, goals against average, scoring margin, and points per game.
Individually, ACC Co-Player of the Week Julia Berkowitz (Amherst, Mass.) is tied for seventh in the nation with 1.29 goals against average and is ranked fourth in the country with a .820 save percentage. Katie Quaglia's (Los Altos, Calif.) 0.75 assists per game is good for a share of the ACC lead and a tie for seventh-best in the country.
Boston College travels to Providence on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. match-up with the 12th-ranked Friars.
