Boston College senior forward Jared Dudley has been named as one of the 50 candidates for the 2006-07 John R. Wooden All-American Team. The list is composed of players who are the early frontrunners for college basketball's most coveted trophy.
Only returning players are eligible for the preseason team, although transfers and freshmen as well as other players who excel throughout the season will be evaluated and considered for the Midseason 30 list and the National Ballot.
Fifteen NCAA conferences are represented on the 50-player list, including seven ACC players. The other ACC players on the list are Coleman Collins (Virginia Tech), Tyler Hansbrough (North Carolina), Josh McRoberts (Duke), Sean Singletary (Virginia), Reyshawn Terry (North Carolina) and Al Thornton (Florida State).
Created in 1976, the John R. Wooden Award is the most prestigious individual honor in college basketball. It is bestowed upon the nation's best player at an institution of higher education who has proven to his university that he is making progress toward graduation and maintaining a cumulative 2.0 GPA.
Dudley returns for his senior season after averaging 16.7 points and 6.6 rebounds per game for the Eagles last winter. The San Diego, Calif., native earned All-ACC second-team accolades in 2005-06. Dudley also gained Division I All-District 1 honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
Boston College finished the 2005-06 season with a 28-8 record, including an 11-5 mark in league play. The Eagles made their fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament in the last six years.
