Chestnut Hill, Mass.--Natick native Molly Schaus was honored with Women's Hockey East's Defensive Player of the Week earlier today in the league's weekly release. Over the weekend, the freshman goaltender stopped 18 of 19 shots en route to the 10th-ranked Boston College women's hockey team's 2-1 season-opening win at Rensselaer on Friday night.
A shot in a second period power play by RPI's Jamie-Lynn Stewart was the only puck to get past Schaus in her first collegiate start. RPI took 13 power play shots and Schaus held the Engineers to only 1-for-8 on the power play. The Eagle netminder's defensive play allowed fellow freshmen Anna McDonald (New Brighton, Minn.) and Allie Thunstrom (Maplewood, Minn.) to tally goals and lead Boston College to a quick 1-0-0 start on the early season.
Hockey East also announced New Hampshire's Samantha Faber as the Player of the Week and Maine's Taryn Peacock as the ITECH Rookie of the Week.
Boston College will return to Chestnut Hill to host Quinnipiac on Saturday, October 7 at 2:00 p.m.
