CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Freshman Benn Ferriero scored two goals and senior Chris Collins netted the decisive tally to lead fifth-ranked Boston College to a 4-3 Hockey East win over Northeastern before 7,288 fans in Kelley Rink.
BC's victory, coupled with Providence's win over Boston University, leaves the two teams tied atop the league standings entering tomorrow night's showdown in Providence's Schneider Arena.
BC junior goalie Joe Pearce made 12 saves to earn his second win in just three appearances this season. Pearce was playing in place of sophomore starter Cory Schneider who had just returned from a stint with Team USA.
Northeastern's Steve Birnstill netted his first goal of the season and the only goal of the first period to give the visitors the edge.
BC scored two goals in the middle period to claim a 2-1 lead. Ferriero netted the first of his two goals at 1:11 of the second period to even the score, before senior captain Peter Harrold gave BC a 2-1 lead with a power-play tally at 7:35.
After NU freshman Matti Uusivirta tied the score with a goal at 5:46 of the third period, Ferriero put BC (11-4-2, 9-2-1 Hockey East) on top to stay with a power-play tally at 14:49.
Collins, the league's top goal scorer, scored his 16th goal of the season into an empty net at 19:11 to give BC a 4-2 cushion.
The visiting Huskies again pulled freshman goalie Doug Jewer in favor of an extra skater and narrowed the margin to one goal on freshman Ryan Ginand's goal with eight seconds remaining. NU (1-12-4, 1-7-4 HE) had a last-second attempt thwarted by the BC defense.
Jewer finished with 27 saves.
