Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Eagles continued strong play against Hockey East opponents as sophomore leading scorer, Deborah Spillane, notched two goals, including the gamewinner to take the first of three-games the Eagles have against the Vermont Catamounts over the next four days.
The Eagles dominated play right out of the gate, but Vermont goalie, Katie Nichols kept it close despite being hammered with 13 shots alone in the first period. Finally with 3:38 left in the first period the Eagles broke open the scoring drought as freshman Shannon Webster scored her first collegiate goal on an assist from sophomore Lindsay Wright. Wright, who scored the gamewinner on Monday night against Northeastern, is currently on a three-game point streak.
The second period provided more offense as Vermont answered back two minutes into the second period as freshman Sarah Smiddy scored her first goal of the season off of passes from Kate Hudspeth and Karen Sentoff to tie the game up at one a piece. But Spillane added to her point total as she snuck the puck past Nichols for her first goal of the game on a pass from classmate Sarah Feldman. Spillane continues to lead the Eagles with 22 points and has tallied at least one point in the last three games. With the score, 2-1, the Eagles took the lead into the third period.
The Eagles sat on a 2-1 lead for most of the third period as no penalties were recorded or goals scored until Spillane scored her second goal of the afternoon with three minutes left in the game. Spillane took a pass from freshman defenseman Stephanie Olchowski to finish off the Catamounts, 3-1 on the afternoon.
Senior goalie Alison Quandt recorded 19 saves on the night while Nichols saved 25.
The Eagles now stand at 8-7-4 and 7-2-1 in Hockey East play. Also with the conference win, the Eagles take over first place in the Hockey East standings. The Eagles return home tomorrow as they take on the University of Vermont Catamounts for a second time at home until they travel to Vermont on Jan. 16.
