Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Sherron Manswell added to his ACC-leading points total as men's soccer fell to #4 ranked Virginia 4-3 in a fiercely contested match at Newton Campus Field.
Manswell wasted no time in the Eagles ACC home opener, deftly gathering an errant goal kick from UVA keeper Ryan Burke and powering a shot inside the left post. The goal was Manswell's eighth of the year.
The Cavaliers threatened to get on the board at 16:28 when Nico Colaluca was taken down in the box, allowing for a penalty kick. Eagles keeper Issey Maholo made a spectacular save on the shot that was heading for the upper left corner to keep the game at 1-0.
Boston College would soon get their first of two penalty kicks when Hadrien Toure was obstructed as he tried to make a play in the box. Toure buried it in the lower right corner and gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Yannick Reyering struck back for Virginia just before halftime, scoring on the third of four penalty kicks in the game, tucking it in the upper right corner, cutting the deficit in half.
At the 52:44 mark, Chris Tierney helped tie the game on the first of his three assists on the night. Tierney sent a free kick towards the net and the Cavaliers leading scorer Adam Cristman placed a header in the upper corner.
With the game tied and intensity of the match increasing, Reuben Ayarna played a ball towards the net that was touched for a handball inside the box by Virginia's Matt Poole. Ayarna gave the Eagles the lead, scoring on their second penalty kick of the night. Unfortunately, Ayarna would soon incur his second yellow card of the evening, rendering the Eagles a man down for the remainder of the match.
The Cavaliers capitalized at the 74:30 mark when Cristman earned his second goal of the evening off a service towards the box by Tierney. Nearly 10 minutes later, Tierney's third assist came off a corner kick that Reyerick headed home for the game-winner.
A packed Newton Campus Field made for a tremendous atmosphere that is sure to be duplicated Friday when 11th ranked Duke visits Boston College at 7 p.m.
