Boston College head men's basketball coach Al Skinner has received a contract extension that will keep him in his current position through the 2010-11 season, according to an announcement made by Boston College director of athletics Gene DeFilippo.
"We are very fortunate to have a man of Al Skinner's character and class leading our basketball program, especially as we had into the Atlantic Coast Conference," DeFilippo said. "As his record indicates, Al has done a phenomenal job coaching our team."
Skinner, who came to Boston College in April 1997 after serving nine years as the head coach at the University of Rhode Island, has a 147-100 record in his eight seasons as the Eagles' head coach. Since the start of the 2000-01 season, Boston College has won 115 games, the highest five-year win total in program history. The Eagles captured three Big East regular-season crowns and one league tournament title in this stretch.
A 1974 graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Skinner has led the Eagles to postseason play in each of the last five years, including four trips to the NCAA Tournament (2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005). He earned Big East Coach of the Year honors in both 2001 and 2005. In 2000-01, Boston College won a school-record 27 games. Last winter, BC established a Big East record by beginning the season with 20 consecutive victories.
Skinner has been inducted into both the University of Massachusetts Athletic Hall of Fame and the University of Rhode Island Athletic Hall of Fame. Skinner starred on the UMass basketball team from 1971-74, capturing All-Yankee Conference honors three times and serving as team captain as a senior. He left the University of Rhode Island as the school's third winningest coach.
