Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Boston College (0-1) fell to third-ranked Stanford (2-1) in the opening match of the first ever BC Invitational in Conte Forum on Thursday.
The Eagles who fell in straight sets (30-15, 30-15, 30-16) to Stanford showed improvement throughout the match and managed to keep the score extremely close in the beginning of game three. After the Eagles closed the gap to 5-4 in the final game, defending national champion Stanford answered with four straight points and never looked back.
Captain Verena Rost had a strong game with 17 assists and three service aces. Junior captain Allison Anderson, last year's Big East Libero of the Year, and junior Kristin Kenney both had 10 digs each in three games played. Sophomore Kelsey Johnson led the team with six kills and added three digs on the defensive side.
The northeast attendance record for a collegiate match was broken as 2127 fans came to support the Eagles. This also marked the first time a collegiate volleyball team in the northeast was covered on television. The game will air on CN8 on September 3, 2005 at 7:00 p.m.
The Eagles continue tournament play on Saturday, September 3, in Power Gym against the visiting Syracuse Orange at 10:00 a.m.
