Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The no. 9 women's soccer team defeated Central Connecticut State University on Sunday, September 18, 2-0. The victory puts the Eagles at 6-0-0 on the season, while the CCSU Blue Devils drop to 5-3-0. Junior goalkeeper Arianna Criscione recorded her sixth shutout. Sophomore Nicole Reyes tallied the game-winner at 14:30, while freshman Caitlin Hiler notched her first collegiate goal at 41:28.
The Eagles controlled play throughout the entire game out-shooting the Blue Devils 23-5, and putting 10 shots on goal. The first goal came in the 15th minute when sophomore Tara Luciani fed Reyes the ball at the top of the box. Reyes beat a defender to the right and slotted the ball into the far left corner.
This is Reyes second goal of the season in as many games. On Wednesday, Sept. 14, Reyes scored the game-winner against Brown University in the Eagles 1-0 victory.
Hiler scored her first collegiate goal in the 42nd minute of the match. Sophomore Maddie Johnson passed it off to Hiler, who then turned to the goal and ripped off a shot. The ball deflected off a CCSU defender and into the goal.
Criscione collected one save on the game for her sixth straight shutout. The junior has played in all 540:00 minutes for the Eagles and recorded 13 saves.
Criscione controlled the box making crucial plays throughout the game. Mid-way through the second half, CCSU was rewarded a corner kick. The ball was served into the six-yard box and Criscione dove over a Blue Devil forward and punched the ball out of danger. Later on, she came out of her box when a CCSU forward broke free and prevented the player from getting a shot off.
Boston College is the only team in the ACC that has not allowed a single goal yet this season.
Senior co-captain Lindsey McArdle led the defense that allowed only one shot on goal the entire game. So far this season the Eagles have only allowed 13 shots on goal while recording 53. The Eagles also hold the edge in corner kicks with 30 to their opponents 12.
The Eagles are ranked ninth in the nation and first in the Northeast according to the latest NSCAA poll. Soccer Buzz Magazine ranks them no. 11, while Soccer America has them at no. 9.
Next up for the Eagles is on Wednesday, Sept. 21 when the Eagles travel cross-town to Northeastern for a 3:00 kick off. After that, the Eagles begin their conference schedule on Sunday, September 25 with a trip to Clemson in their first ever ACC game. Kick off for Sunday is set for 2:00.
