Quinton Porter completed 16-of-22 passes for 122 yards in the Eagles second intrasquad scrimmage Wednesday evening in Alumni Stadium.
"I think he [Porter] took full advantage of his year off," head coach Tom O'Brien said. "He is much more decisive. He sees things quicker and makes faster reads. He understands where he is going with the ball and his decision making is good. If he continues to improve, that is good for him and will be good for us."
Porter and sophomore Matt Ryan combined to throw 39 times and seven Eagles' receivers caught multiple balls on the night.
Redshirt freshman Brandon Robinson led the receiving corps with five catches for 75 yards and one touchdown - a 25-yard pass from Ryan. Will Blackmon and Kevin Challenger accounted for four receptions apiece while Larry Lester and fullback Mark Palmer each caught three passes. Robinson, Blackmon, Tony Gonzalez and freshman Greg Anderson each registered at least one catch of 20-plus yards.
Ryan complete 10-of-17 passes for 116 yards, including one touchdown and one interception by freshman Paul Anderson.
Survival Ross carried 12 times for 76 yards and a touchdown to lead all rushers. L.V. Whitworth followed with 12 rushes for 26 yards while Mike Makinde carried the ball six times for 13 yards.
The defense came on strong once again, led by defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka who recorded two sacks.
Sophomore place-kicker Ryan Ohliger and William Troost combined to connect on 5-of-7 field goals. Ohliger hit from 25, 30 and 29 yards, while Troost connected from 31 and 33 yards. Both missed 40-yard attempts.
The Eagles resume practice on Thursday before their third of four scrimmages in the preseason on Sunday.
