Junior forward Craig Smith earned team MVP honors and senior center Nate Doornekamp captured the Frank Power Memorial Award, highlighting the program's year-end Cage Club Banquet. The event was held at the Boston Marriott Cambridge on Sunday, May 1.
Smith earned All-Big East first-team honors after leading the Eagles in both scoring (18.0 ppg) and rebounding (8.5 ppg). The 6-foot-7-inch forward also gained Division I District 1 all-star honors from both the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the United States Basketball Writers Association.
Doornekamp averaged 5.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game in 30 games this season to earn the Frank Power Memorial Award for the second consecutive season. The award is given annually to the player who best demonstrates the dedication, spirit, loyalty and love for Boston College and its basketball program that was characteristic of the Eagles' former coach.
Doornekamp also took home a share of the team's Defensive MVP award.
In addition to Smith and Doornekamp, seven other individuals were recognized at the banquet. Junior Louis Hinnant won the Leadership Award; freshman Sean Williams shared Defensive MVP honors with Doornekamp; junior Ted Dunlap earned the team's Academic Award; sophomore Sean Marshall captured Most Improved Player honors; sophomore Jared Dudley took home the Top Rebounder Award; junior Steve Scalzi won the Mary Kay Waldron Managers' Award; and senior Jermaine Watson captured the Sixth Man accolade for the second consecutive year.
Boston College finished the 2004-05 season with a 25-5 mark, including a 13-3 record in the Big East Conference. BC, which tied for the league's regular-season title, earned its fourth NCAA Tournament bid in the last five years.
The 2005-06 Eagles will feature six returning lettermen, including four starters.
