On the women's side, the Eagles finished fourth in the 2005 Big East Championship. Like the men, the women's championship was shortened to an 18-hole event.
The final round of the 2005 Big East Men's and Women's Golf Championships was cancelled Sunday morning after Warren Golf Course was deemed unplayable due to poor weather conditions. With weather also causing the loss of one of Saturday's scheduled two rounds, the 54-hole Championships were forced to be shortened to 18 holes of play.
The Notre Dame men's team won its second straight conference crown and the Big East's automatic bid to the 2005 NCAA Men's Golf Championship, by turning in a score of 311 (+ 31) on Saturday. The St. John's women, playing in its first BIG EAST Championship, earned the league title with a mark of 329 (+41).
Freshman Katie Napleton shot an 86 to land here ninth overall. Napleton was BC's top finisher in every tournament of the spring season.
Finishing behind Napleton were the team's three captains. In her final collegiate tournament, Moira O'Connell shot an 87 and finished tied for 10th overall. Prior to this weekend's action, O'Connell's best performance was the Lady Hoya Invitational (43rd overall).
Tiffany Wernig, who tied O'Connell at the Lady Hoya Invitational for her best round of the spring season, shot an 89 and finished 15th. Elizabeth Callery rounded out the senior captains for BC. Her 91 placed her tied for 17th overall.
Elizabeth Friel, a constant on the BC squad all season, shot a 96 to round out the finishers for the Eagles.
With the three captains playing in their last tournament, the team will miss the leadership provided by Callery, O'Connell and Wernig. In their tenure at The Heights, BC women's golf has made significant strides and, with the youth of the team providing some firepower, will go on to improve in the coming seasons.
