Freshman Jim Granello topped the leaderboard for the Eagles and led the squad to a fourth-place finish in the 2005 Big East Championships. The tournament was hosted by Notre Dame last weekend.
The final round of the 2005 Big East Men's and Women's Golf Championships was cancelled Sunday morning after Warren Golf Course was deemed unplayable due to poor weather conditions. With weather also causing the loss of one of Saturday's scheduled two rounds, the 54-hole Championships were forced to be shortened to 18 holes of play.
The Notre Dame men's team won its second straight conference crown and the Big East's automatic bid to the 2005 NCAA Men's Golf Championship, by turning in a score of 311 (+ 31) on Saturday. The St. John's women, playing in its first Big East Championship, earned the league title with a mark of 329 (+41).
Granello's +8 round (78) placed him tied for fifth overall in the conference tournament. The finish was the first year's highest of his rookie collegiate campaign.
Tying for 16th overall were juniors Kyle Kelly and Jim Roney. The pair both shot +12, rounds of 82 and finished 16th overall.
Freshmen Alex Snickenberger and Bob Reed rounded out the BC finishers. Snickenberger shot an 85 and placed 24th in the final standings. Reed shot an 87 and came ion a 28th.
The team had a successful spring season. With notable performances coming from Snickenberger, who shot par at the William and Mary Invitational, and Kelly, who led the Eagles to the tournament victory at the Yale Spring Invitational, this young team will continue to turn heads in the future.
