Queens, N.Y. - The Boston College softball team split a BIG EAST doubleheader against St. John's Sunday afternoon at Red Storm Field. The Eagles dropped a 7-4 decision in game one, but came back to take a 3-2 victory in the nightcap. With the split, the Eagles are 13-15 on the season and 3-3 in the BIG EAST.
In the first game, Boston College found themselves down 3-0 after just one inning as St. John's pushed across three runs on two hits. The Red Storm added another run on the third for a 4-0 advantage after three innings.
BC cut into the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth as Kimmy Hopkin (Dove Canyon, Calif.) scored on an error and Lisa Field (Encinitas, Calif.) belted an RBI double. The Eagles added another pair of runs in the seventh, on another two-RBI double by Field. The two-out rally fell short at 7-4, however.
Elena Ferrero (Van Nuys, Calif.) took the loss on the mound, allowing six runs on six hits in 4.2 innings pitched. Field was 2-for-3 with three RBI on the afternoon.
In the nightcap, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Ashley Obrest (Elmwood Park, Ill.) belted an RBI double that scored Kristin Allain (Worcester, Mass.), who reached on an error. The Red Storm would tie it in the third on a solo homerun, but BC scored two more in the sixth inning as Hopkin smacked a single and scored ahead of Obrest on her two-run homerun. Though St. John's would smack a two-out homerun in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead at 3-2, the rally ended thereafter.
Michelle Daly (Concord, Mass.) collected the win in the circle, pitching 6.2 innings en route to improving to 7-6. Hopkin went 2-for-4 on the afternoon while Obrest was a perfect 2-for-2, knocking in all three BC runs.
Boston College will return to Chestnut Hill, Mass. for a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader against Harvard Tuesday.
