Carlson, Spillane Earn Hockey East Honors

Cambridge, Mass. - Boston College senior defenseman Sarah Carlson was named a Hockey East First Team All-Star and freshman center Deborah Spillane was selected as a Hockey East Second Team All-Star and member of the ITECH All-Rookie Team today at the conference's annual banquet at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Cambridge, Mass. Head coach Tom Mutch gained CCM Co-Coach of the Year honors with New Hampshire's Brian McCloskey.
Carlson, a team co-captain, led the BC defense this season. She played in all 33 games for the Eagles, recording a career-high three goals and six assists for nine points this year. Carlson was the runner-up for the Sportsmanship Award for the second consecutive year.
In her first season with BC, Spillane made an immediate impact. The freshman scored a team-leading 19 goals and added 16 assists for 35 points. Nationally she is fourth in the in points and third in goals among all rookies. Spillane is also second in the league in power-play tallies with 12. She was also the runner-up for the Rookie of the Year award.
In his second season with the Eagles, Coach Mutch has guided BC to its first Hockey East semifinal berth. He has led BC to its most successful season since joining the conference three years ago. The Eagles finished the regular season with a conference mark of 6-11-3.
The Eagles will face the Friars in the semifinals on Saturday at Boston University's Walter Brown Arena. The puck drops at 12 p.m.
