Women's Ice Hockey Advances To Finals Of The Beanpot

Boston, Mass. - Six different players scored as the Boston College women's ice hockey team defeated Boston University, 9-1 in the first round of the Beanpot Tournament on Tuesday night at Northeastern's Matthews Arena. The Eagles will look to capture their first Beanpot when they face off against the winner of the Northeastern/Harvard game next Tuesday at 8 p.m.
In the opening period the Eagles out-shot the Terriers 26-2. Michelle Lombardi notched the first two goals of the game. Nancy Gillis, Kim Meagher, and Deborah Spillane also added scores for BC. Lindsay Wright also scored two goals in the first.
Kerri Sanders, Sarah Carlson, Krystal Strassman, Erin Blood, and Jill McInnis assisted on goals in the period. Sarah Feldman also tallied two assists.
The Eagles headed into the first intermission with a 7-1 advantage.
In the middle frame, BC out-shot BU 6-1.
In the third, Spillane added to BC's lead with her second goal of the game. Rachel Wedig and Strassman assisted on the tally. With 38 seconds left in regulation, Jessica Wilson scored the final goal off a pass from Strassman. Strassman finished the game with three assists.
Christine Moynihan made two saves for the Eagles, while Eden Spencer stopped 33 shots for the Terriers.
BC (7-15-3) will host Hockey East opponent Northeastern on Saturday at 2 p.m. Tonight's victory will not count toward BC's overall record since BU is a club team. In the 2005-06 season the Terriers will join the Hockey East conference.
