The men's track team excelled in the middle distance events at this weekend's New England Championships and earned a fifth-place finish in the 36-team field. The Eagles improved from their 17th-place showing last winter.
In one of the most exciting races of the day, the BC 4x800-meter relay team of Patrick Mellea, Jeremy Zagorski, Trevor Rozier-Byrd and Frank DiVittorio posted victory behind a mark of 7 minutes, 37.92 seconds - its best time of the season. The Eagles were trailing as DiVittorio entered the anchor leg of the relay but the freshman ran a 1:51.5 split to come from behind and claim the win. The Eagles edged out second-place Maine by less than one second.
The four runners continued their strong performances in the individual events. DiVittorio finished second in the 1,000-meter run with a mark of 2:26.29. Rozier-Byrd was sixth in 2:29.58. DiVittorio's mark was BC's best time of the season. The two combined for 11 points in the race.
Mellea and Zagorski finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the mile. Mellea finished in 4:11.24 while Zagorski was just a step behind in 4:11.54. The times are BC's two fastest of the season.
Sophomore Mark Alizzi scored in both the 3,000- and 5,000-meter events. Alizzi finished fourth in the 3,000 with a mark of 8:20.87. He came in second in the 5,000 with a mark of 14:37.74. He earned a total of 13 points for BC and registered the team's fastest times in both events this season. Freshman Adam Moitoso finished sixth in the 5,000.
The distance medley relay team ran a gutsy race to finish fifth. Senior Drew Bouchard lost his shoe during his leg of the race and was forced to slow down. The Eagles were still able to earn four crucial points with their finish.
BC will compete in next weekend's IC4A Championships in Boston.
