CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior Chris Collins tallied his first collegiate hat trick and freshman Nathan Gerbe added two goals to lead Boston College to a 7-0 Hockey East victory over Massachusetts before 4,641 fans in Kelley Rink.
Sophomore goalie Cory Schneider made 21 saves to record his second shutout and eighth victory of the season.
Boston College led 3-0 after one period and extended its margin to 5-0 after two periods.
Collins opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 7:19. Freshman Andrew Orpik netted his first collegiate goal at 15:32, before Gerbe concluded the period's scoring with a short-handed goal at 17:40.
Gerbe and Collins each added one goal in the middle period to give BC (8-4-1, 7-2-1 Hockey East) a commanding 5-0 advantage.
Freshman Benn Ferriero scored his second goal of the season - both in the last two games - at 4:16. Collins completed the scoring at 14:30.
Senior goalie Gabe Winer made 27 saves in two periods of action for Massachusetts (5-9-0, 3-6-0 HE). Freshman Jon Quick made seven saves in the third period.
The game was delayed 45 minutes because of storm-related travel difficulties encountered by Massachusetts en route to the game.
The two teams will play again in Amherst, Mass., tomorrow night (Dec. 10).
Game Notes: Collins tallied a career-high four points - three goals and one assist. The hat trick marked the first for a BC player since Patrick Eaves scored three goals against Massachusetts on Feb. 14, 2004 ... junior forward Brian Boyle registered a career-best four assists, becoming the first BC player to tally four assists in a game since Ben Eaves did so on Jan. 31, 2003 ... Gerbe's two-goal output marked his second multiple-goal game of his career ... the shutout marked Schneider's second of the season and third of his career.
