GREENSBORO, N.C. - Seniors Bronwen Kelly (Mississauga, Ontario) and Kristen Madden (Concord, N.H.) were named to the 2005 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Team, as announced Wednesday night by the conference office. All 17 student-athletes, representative of all six league schools, were honored at the pre-tournament banquet Wednesday evening.
Duke led the way with five selections, while regular-season champion Wake Forest was second with four. Maryland placed three student-athletes on the team, while Boston College and North Carolina each had two and Virginia had one.
Madden leads all BC scorers with 31 points on 12 goals and seven assists while Kelly is fourth on the team with 17 points on five goals and seven assists. Both players have played in and started every game of their careers.
Duke forward Katie Grant was voted the league's Offensive Player of the Year, as she led the ACC in goals (18) and points (44) despite missing four games to compete with the United States' Under-21 team at the Junior World Cup. The senior becomes the first Duke player to earn Player of the Year honors.
Maryland midfielder Paula Infante was named the ACC's Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the first Terrapin to earn the award and the sixth Maryland player to earn Player of the Year accolades.
Wake Forest head coach Jennifer Averill was voted the conference's Coach of the Year for the fourth time in her career and the third time in the last four years after leading the Demon Deacons to the ACC regular-season title. Averill led Wake Forest to an 18-0 record and a 5-0 mark in ACC play, marking the first time Wake has finished the regular season undefeated. Averill also had the Deacons atop the STX/NFHCA poll for the duration of the regular season.
