Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Despite an early 1-0 lead by the Huskies, Boston College came back to beat Connecticut, 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Kelley Rink. Freshman forward Becky Zavisza scored the game-winning goal in the third period off a pass by classmate Maggie Taverna. The Eagles now stand at 4-2-4 on the season and 3-1-1 in Hockey East play.
In a game dominated by defense, the Huskies struck late in the first period on an unassisted goal by sophomore Liz Gallinaro. Gallinaro slid the puck past senior co-captain Alison Quandt for her third goal of the season.
But the Huskies' lead would be brief. Two minutes later, sophomore forward Sarah Feldman took a feed from freshman Meghan Fardelmann to tie the game up at one a piece. This was Feldman's sixth goal of the season and Fardelmann's first assist of the season.
The second and third period was dominated by BC's defense. The Huskies had seven shots on goal in the first period but were held to just three shots combined in periods two and three.
"We played very well from start to finish," head coach Tom Mutch said. "I think we did a great job defending the middle of the rink, especially in the last two periods. I thought their goaltender played very well. It's a great two points for us to home, especially with this being our last conference game before Thanksgiving break. I think we are defending the net better which is allowing us to go on offense much more quickly."
Halfway through the third period, Zavisza scored the gamewinner; her sixth goal of the season. She is now tied for the lead on the team in goals scored with Feldman. Taverna, who assisted on the goal, tallied her fifth assist of the season.
Connecticut goaltender, Kaitlyn Shain had 18 saves on the afternoon while Quandt tallied nine.
The Eagles go on the road against Quinnipiac for the second time this season on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. BC returns to home and Hockey East action on Sunday, Dec. 4 at 2 p.m.
