Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Boston College co-ed sailing has received the #1 ranking in the nation in the latest poll released by Sailing World, marking the first time in program history the Eagles have earned the nation's top spot. "The team is very excited and I'm proud of our efforts over the past 5 weeks," said Head Coach Greg Wilkinson. The Eagles had previously been ranked fifth.
Winning their third straight regatta this past weekend, the Eagles captured the Danmark Trophy hosted by the Coast Guard Academy. Traditionally one of the most competitive regattas of the fall season, this year's field of 18 schools included 14 of the top 20 nationally ranked teams. Boston College took home a nine point victory over former No. 1 University of Hawaii.
"We're excited to be doing so well with such a young team," Wilkinson said. "I've been impressed by the fact that the sailors seem to have this in perspective. As excited as they are, they're already focused on the work it will take to stay #1."
Boston College returns to action both Saturday and Sunday with a series of races as they look to continue their winning ways.
