Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Eagles fell to first-place Maryland on Tuesday night, 3-0. Maryland who is tied for first place in the ACC with North Carolina improved to 18-1 on the season overall and 9-1 in conference play. The Eagles stayed tough in games one and two but couldn't stretch the match to four games. The scores of the games were 30-27, 30-16 and 30-28. The Eagles fall to 6-13 overall and 1-9 in league play.
Sophomore middle blocker Abigail Hasebroock and junior outside hitter Dorota Niemczewska led the Eagles with 10 kills a piece. Niemczewska led BC with a .286 hitting percentage for the night as well as adding nine digs
Senior co-captain Verena Rost dished out 25 assist to the Eagles and had 10 digs as well as two digs and one served aced. Junior co-captain Allison Anderson dug 14 balls for the night
Also adding offensively was sophomore Kelsey Johnson who had seven kills and three served aces. Johnson also had six digs for the match.
Freshmen setter Brittany Pierpont contributed to the attack putting down two kills and assisting on 11 of her teammates. Junior middle blocker Morgan Woodcock had three kills, three digs and three blocks along with serving up an ace
In the first game of the match the Eagles stayed with the No.1 `Terps, but Maryland took three straight points from the Eagles and took game one on an attack error by BC.
In game two, Maryland proved why they are number one in the conference and went on a 6-1 run at the end of the game to make the match 2-0.
One of the Eagle's largest crowds this season of almost 400 people, second only to their first match of the year against Stanford, cheered BC on as they tried to extend the match against a strong Maryland team. With the score, 22-27, and match point approaching the Eagles went on a 6-2 run, but the `Terps pulled away and took the game and the match on a kill by Stephanie Smith.
Leading the`Terps attack for the match was Rachel Wagener with 15 kills and Teryn Papp who added 32 assists.
The Eagles take on North Carolina State for the first time on Friday, Oct. 22, at 8 p.m. at home in Power gym.
