
Women's Ice Hockey Wins Second Straight Game

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Freshman Becky Zavisza scored the game-winning goal on a power play with 1:40 to play in the third period and scored again with 40 seconds on the clock to lift the Eagles over the Maine Black Bears, 5-3. The Eagles soar to a 2-0-0 start overall and are now 1-0-0 in Hockey East action.
Zavisza, a preseason All-USCHO rookie team selection, scored her first two collegiate points in the game. Meghan Fardelmann, another rookie for the Eagles, scored her second collegiate point as she netted the second goal of the afternoon for BC.
Sophomore Lindsay Wright opened up scoring for the Eagles on a power play goal 17:44 into the second period after a scoreless first period by both teams. Sophomores Colleen Harris and Erin Blood assisted on the opening play.
After Fardelmann's goal with 5:40 left in the second period, Maine answered back four minutes later with a short-handed goal by Pam Patterson who was assisted by Cheryl White and Sheri Wauters. The rest of the scoring would come in the final period.
Maine scored first in the third period as Cheryl White evened up the score as she put the puck in the net on a short-handed goal. Senior assistant captain Nancy Gillis, scored next for the Eagles on a short-handed goal to put Boston College ahead, 3-2 at 10:01. Maine would score next to tie up the game again on another power play as White put in her second goal of the game at 8:25. Zavisza tallied the final two goals of the night including the game-winning goal at 1:47 and her second goal of the game at: 40.
Maine out shot Boston College 20-15 but freshman goalie Johanna Ellison registered the win coming up with 17 saves in her first collegiate game.
Deborah Spillane who scored the game-winning goal against Quinnipiac had two assists in the Eagle's victory.
Maine goaltender, Genevieve Turgeon had 10 saves for the Black Bears.
Boston College takes on cross-town rival Boston University on Tuesday, Oct., 18, as the Terriers enter the Hockey East for the first year as a varsity program. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
