Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Boston College co-ed sailing set out to prove it was deserving of the nation's top spot and did so with two titles over the weekend. Sailing at the University of Vermont, the Eagles captured the Lake Champlain Open for the third time in four years. Jay Connolly and Erin Morley turned in a strong performance for the Eagles as did the duo of Spencer Powers and Brooke Dow as each team won their respective division. Boston College won the overall event by 30 points.
Sophomore Reed Johnson placed third at the NEISA's Singlehanded Conference Championship, qualifying for the Singlehanded Nationals for the second straight year. Also at the University of Vermont, the event was sailed in conditions suitable to Johnson with one to two foot waves and a northerly breeze at 15 knots. The sophomore will look to improve on his 2005 Singlehanded Nationals performance where he took home sixth place. The Championship will be hosted by the University of Hawaii on November 18-20.
Locally, Boston College was able to capture the Metro Series regatta sailed at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Charles Bayer and Quinn Ziatyk finished second in the A division while Mike Grosso and Nicole Benson won the B division.
The Eagles talented freshman squad sailed its first Team Race Intersectional, finishing fifth at the Hap Moore Team Race. The teams of Adam Roberts and Aly Whitehead, Parker Dwyer and Allie Nagle along with Brian Kamilar and Andrew Schneider, with heavy air crews Jeff Sloan and Alan Frith, sailed well to finish in the top half of the event. The Eagles were able to beat seven squads with considerably more experience.
