Boston College men's soccer senior co-captain Guy Melamed was drafted in the fourth round of the Major League Soccer SuperDraft by the Colorado Rapids on Friday afternoon.
The 2004 Big East Midfielder of the Year is the fourth Boston College player in the past three seasons to link on with MLS. Former BC standout Paul Keegan was the first Eagle to be drafted into the league and Casey Schmidt was a fifth-round selection of the Rapids in 2003.
Melamed, a College Soccer News first-team and an NSCAA/adidas second-team All-American, led the Eagles to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to eventual champion Indiana University. The three-time All-Big East first-team selection was impressive in the midfield after playing his first three years in the backfield. Melamed had a goal and four assists on the season.
"I feel great," Melamed said. "I'm definitely excited about going to Colorado and I plan on speaking with Casey soon."
Melamed received a phone call from the Rapids' new head coach, Fernando Clavijo, soon after learning he had been selected.
"He said he was happy I was still available and I thanked him for his trust," Melamed said. "I'm really excited for the opportunity to prove myself."
The three-time team captain has already finished his undergraduate degree and is currently pursuing his master's. Those plans will be put on hold for a little while, however, as players report to training camp next month.
Melamed was a semi-finalist for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy the past two seasons. The award is the most prestigious individual accolade for a college soccer player.
