The Boston College men's soccer team won its season opener, 3-1, over #21 Brown at the Newton Campus Soccer Field on Friday afternoon. With the score tied at one, the Eagles took charge with less than 13 minutes remaining in the contest, scoring two goals in a six-minute span to earn the victory. Freshman Johann Helgason (Akureyri, Iceland) scored the game-winner on a feed from classmate Satoshi Mitsuda (Honolulu, Hawaii) at the 77:48 mark. Mitsuda sent the ball through two Brown defenders from the left side of the field, finding Helgason for a 2-1 Boston College lead. Just six minutes later, Eagles' senior co-captain Pat Haggerty (Lawrenceville, N.J.) netted an insurance goal, heading in a corner kick from freshman Hadrien Toure (Lyon, France) at 83:46. Freshman Charlie Davies (Manchester, N.H.) registered the Eagles' first goal of the 2004 season at the 30:18 mark of the first half. Davies beat his defender outside the left box and shot the ball across the goal, finding the right corner of the net. The score remained 1-0 until five minutes into the second half, when Brown senior captain Jeff Larentowicz (West Chester, Pa.) scored on a free kick to tie the game at one. Boston College sophomore goalkeeper Issey Maholo (Tokyo, Japan) registered the second victory of his career while notching seven saves. Brown senior goalie Chris Gomez (Bellflower, Calif.) had three saves. The Eagles will host Cal State-Northridge on Sunday, September 5 at 2 p.m. as they attempt to begin the season with a 2-0 record.
