Senior defensive midfielder Guy Melamed, sophomore goalkeeper Issey Maholo and freshman forward Charlie Davies were recognized by the BIG EAST on Monday afternoon for their performances in No. 12 Boston College's two shutout victories this past week.
Melamed, this week's BIG EAST Defender of the Week, was dominant in both 2-0 wins over conference rivals Providence and No. 5 St. John's. In the upset victory over the Red Storm, Melamed marked 2004 BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, Simone Salinno, limiting him to just two shots. Melamed registered an assist in both games, including the helper on the game-winning goal against Providence. The co-captain was the 2004 BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
Maholo was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week for the third time in four weeks. The sophomore stopped seven shots in the two victories while recording his third and fourth shutouts of the year. Maholo sports a 0.57 goals-against average through the season's first seven games.
Davies earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors for the second time this season. Davies enjoyed his first career multi-goal game on Wednesday night when he scored both BC goals against Providence. He also registered two shots in the win over St. John's, and provided constant pressure on the Red Storm defense. Davies leads the Eagles with 12 points, five goals and 22 shots. The freshman has three game-winning goals this season.
The Eagles (6-1-0, 3-1-0) will look for their third win over a ranked opponent when they head to South Bend on Friday night to take on No. 14 Notre Dame at 7:30 p.m.
