
Women's Tennis Impressive At William And Mary Invitational

The women's tennis team had a successful first day of competition on Friday as the fall tennis season got under way at the College of William and Mary Invitational.
Junior Szilvia Szegedi had impressive performances in singles and doubles. Szegedi, the 84th-ranked player in the country, defeated Duke's Jenny Zika - 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 - in the first round of the Flight A singles. Zika is ranked 68th by the ITA.
Szegedi also teamed with senior co-captain Nida Waseem to advance to the third round of the Flight A doubles competition. The duo defeated Kristin Cargill and Tory Zawacki of Duke - 8-6 - in the first round. Szegedi and Waseem then went on to beat Diana Srebrovic and Kristen James from the University of Virginia - 9-8 (7-5).
"Szilvia's day has been extra special," said coach Nigel Bentley. "She's proving she's one of the elite players in the country."
Senior Emily Yeomans won her first round match in Flight D competition, defeating Virginia Tech's Gabriela Carvalho - 6-4, 6-4. Waseem, fellow co-captain Morgan Landes and freshman Gia Nafarrete lost in the first round of singles play. Waseem lost 6-0, 6-1 to Megan Muth of William and Mary, the nation's 15th-ranked player.
Bentley and the Eagles are pleased with the first day of the season and are looking forward to another successful day on Saturday.
"It was an exciting first day of the season," Bentley said. "There are a lot of terrific individual players here and there's a lot of good tennis to be played."
