For the second time in three weeks, the Eagles' Coed Team came out on top of the leader board at college sailing's premier regatta this weekend. For the first time in team history, BC captured the Nevin's Trophy, beating 19 other schools.
The regatta featured high winds - with racing cancelled on Saturday, and 15 races sailed on Sunday in winds gusting to 30 knots. BC's freshman Reed Johnson debuted in the singlehanded C Division, finishing 2nd, just 4 points behind two-time All-American Andrew Campbell. Jeff Bonanni '05 and Tim Orazem '06 sailed consistently in A division and won a tie breaker for 4th place. In B division, Ben Gent '05 and Guillaume Seynhaeve '05, came in 2nd, just missing first place honors in yet another tie breaker.
The Eagles' consistent sailing in all three divisions allowed them to take home the Nevins Trophy, beating out 2nd place St. Mary's by 7 points. Rounding out the top ten were a total of six of college sailing's top ten nationally ranked teams - including Harvard, Dartmouth, Georgetown, and King's Point in addition to BC and St. Mary's. With two major wins already this season - the first at Yale two weekends ago, BC looks to move up in the national rankings later this week from their 10th place pre-season ranking.
The BC Women's Team finished 7th in their first intersectional of the year at Dartmouth's Mrs. Hurst Bowl. Julie Wilson '05 and Lizz McAlpine '06 finished 9th in A division while Maura Winston '06 and Kristen Goodby '07 & Leland McManus '06 came in 6th in B division. The women's schedule is now in full swing with qualifiers for Singlehanded Nationals next weekend and intersectionals on five of the next six weekends.
In other competition, the eagles finished 7th overall at the Hatch Brown Intersectional with Frank Ustach '05 and Mallory Fontenot '08 placing 2nd in A division, while Jay Connolly '07 and Erin Morley '07 finished a disappointing 11th in B after being disqualified in one race.
Spencer Powers '07 and Brook Dow '07 teamed up with freshmen Leigh Kempton '08 and Emily Flint '08 at this weekend's Metro Series - BC finished 2nd in both divisions and 2nd overall to Tufts. The freshmen team of Alden Reid '08 & Julie Howe '08, Chaz Bayer '08 & Quinn Ziatyk '08, and Leigh Kempton '08 & Emily Flint '08 rallied to a 4th place finish their first Team Race event of their college careers.
The BC freshmen began the regatta by losing their first three races, but were able to come back and win three in a row in the afternoon to finish with a .500 record in 4th place overall.
