Boston College head men's basketball coach Al Skinner has received a contract extension that will keep him in his current position through the 2009-10 season, according to an announcement made by Boston College director of athletics Gene DeFilippo.
"We're all very excited that Al Skinner will continue to lead our basketball program," DeFilippo said. "Al is a first-class individual who has done an outstanding job with our basketball team and he's done it in a manner in which we can all be very proud."
Skinner, who came to Boston College in April 1997 after serving nine years as the head coach at the University of Rhode Island, has a 122-95 record in his seven seasons as the Eagles' head coach.
A 1974 graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Skinner has led the Eagles to postseason play in each of the last four years, including three trips to the NCAA Tournament (2001, 2002 and 2004). In 2000-01, Boston College won a school-record 27 games while capturing the Big East Conference's East Division crown and the 2001 Big East Tournament championship.
In the last four years (2000-04), Boston College has won 90 games, the highest four-year total in program history.
Skinner has been inducted into both the University of Massachusetts Athletic Hall of Fame and the University of Rhode Island Athletic Hall of Fame. Skinner starred on the UMass basketball team from 1971-74, capturing All-Yankee Conference honors three times and serving as team captain as a senior. He left the University of Rhode Island as the school's third winningest coach.
