CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The Boston College field hockey team opened the 2004 season with a heartbreaking overtime loss to Maryland Saturday afternoon at Jordan Field in Cambridge, Mass. With the loss, Boston College falls to 0-1 on the young season. The Terps improve to 1-0.
Boston College capitalized on an early penalty corner goal when Bronwen Kelly (Mississauga, Ontario) found the back of the net on a pass from Kristen Madden (Concord, N.H.) as a penalty corner unfolded. The Eagles kept the lead for the half, standing firm on defense behind eight first-half saves from Jillian Savoy (Lexington, Mass.). Savoy tallied 17 saves on the afternoon.
Maryland opened the second half with a goal of its own but BC answered back within two minutes as Sabrina Lazzari (Weston, Mass.) drove home a goal at the close post on an Eagle breakaway. The Eagles held on to their slim 2-1 lead until the Terps tied the game with just under three minutes to play, forcing a seven-on-seven 15-minute overtime period.
Two minutes into the overtime, Savoy was called for an intentional foul inside the circle, giving Maryland a penalty corner. Savoy was given a yellow card and removed from the game. Not allowed to substitute into the game on a penalty corner, the Eagles were forced to use a kick-in back to defend the corner. Unable to stop the Terp attack, BC allowed the game-winning goal at the 72:11 mark for the 3-2 Maryland win.
The Eagles host Massachusetts Wednesday in a 7:00 p.m. game at Bentley College.
