Solid defense and nasty weather were the story Friday evening in Alumni Stadium as the Eagles played their second intrasquad scrimmage of preseason camp. After the team had run six series, a lightning storm moved through the Chestnut Hill area, forcing a 50-minute delay before play could resume. "I thought there was much more enthusiasm out there tonight, especially after the storm," Coach Tom O'Brien said. "We were very physical again tonight." The Eagle defense registered 10 quarterback sacks, including three from junior linebacker Ray Henderson. Sophomore defensive tackle Justin Bell also picked off a Paul Peterson pass and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown. Peterson finished the night 6-of-10 for 45 yards. Fellow senior Quinton Porter completed 11-of-15 passes for 103 yards, while redshirt freshman Matthew Ryan completed 8-of-16 passes for 123 yards. Sophomore Jeff Ross led all rushers with 48 yards on 14 carries, including a one-yard touchdown run to cap off the first series of the scrimmage. Redshirt freshman L.V. Whitworth carried 10 times for 17 yards and a touchdown. The Eagles will conduct their final preseason scrimmage on Monday at 1 p.m.
