CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. - Yvonne Hawkins will join the Boston College women's basketball staff as an assistant coach, according to an announcement made by Boston College head women's basketball coach Cathy Inglese. Hawkins replaces Charmin Smith, who recently took a job at Stanford University, her alma mater.
"We are very excited about the arrival of Yvonne to our program," says Inglese. "Her vast experience as a teacher and recruiter, as well as her passion for the game will be a great complement to our existing staff."
Hawkins comes to Boston College after having served 21 years within the college coaching ranks. During her career, she has been an assistant at both Albany (15 years) and Yale (two years). In addition, she served as head coach for two years at SUNY-Delhi.
Most recently, Hawkins spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the Yale women's basketball program. While with the Bulldogs, she served as recruiting coordinator and had on-court teaching responsibility for the guard and small forward positions. Last summer, she also spent time scouting for the WNBA Champion Detroit Shock.
During her 15-year stint at the University of Albany, Hawkins was an integral member of the coaching staff. She helped the program move from Division III up to Division I in the span of years from 1996 to 2002. Her last three years with the Great Danes were at the Division I level.
Hawkins graduated from Ashland University in 1983 with a bachelor of education degree in physical education. While in Ohio, Hawkins was a two-time captain of her Eagles squad.
