Senior Garrett Greer (Peabody, Mass.) drove in four runs but the Boston College baseball team still fell one run short, losing to Central Connecticut State, 8-7, Thursday, May 6 in Chestnut Hill. CCSU improved to 34-12-1 while the Eagles (22-22) evened their mark once again.
The Blue Devils' Phil Rothkugel whacked a two-run home run in the ninth inning that eclipsed a one-run Boston College lead to make it 8-7, the sixth lead change of the game. In the evenly-matched contest, each team committed an error while CCSU stroked eight runs on 12 hits to BC's seven tallies on 13 hits.
BC grabbed the 7-6 lead in the eighth when Drew Locke (Weymouth, Mass.) doubled, moved over to third on Ryan Leahy's (Salem, Mass.) sacrifice bunt then crossed the plate on Garrett Greer's single up the middle, his fourth RBI of the game. With a man on first and third, Mark Peterson, the eventual winning pitcher, got Ryan Morgan (Weymouth, Mass.) to ground out to second, ending the inning.
CCSU then jumped quickly in its next opportunity when Tim D'Aquila singled off BC reliever Ryan Morgan, the eventual losing pitcher, and the next batter, Phil Rothkugel, launched his fourth home run of the season.
Garrett Greer, who had three hits, including a two-run home run, and Drew Locke, who also belted three hits, paced the Eagle squad. Four Blue Devil hitters contributed a pair of hits including Tom Pezzello, who drove in a team-best three runs.
BC travels to West Virginia, Saturday, May 8. Game time is 3 p.m.
