Baseball Team Defeats St. John's, 6-4
May 28, 2004 | Baseball
Junior Dave Preziosi (Oradell, N.J) knocked in a career high four runs and made a game-saving catch with the tying runs on base in the top of the ninth to lead Boston College to a 6-4 win over second-seeded St. John's to eliminate the Red Storm at the 2004 BIG EAST Baseball Championship at Commerce Bank Ballpark.
The Eagles (32-26) advance to Saturday's championship round where they will need to defeat Notre Dame twice to earn the conference's automatic bid to the 2004 NCAA Tournament. The Irish need just one victory to take the crown. St. John's drops to 36-21 and awaits a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Championship.
Preziosi helped BC overcome an early 1-0 deficit with a two-run single in the fourth inning, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead. In his next at bat in the fifth, the junior hit his first career home run to give Boston College a 5-1 advantage.
St. John's scored twice in the top of the sixth on run-scoring singles by P.J. Antoniato (Levittown, N.Y.) and Greg Thomson (Levittown, N.Y.). The Eagles scored an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by Drew Locke (Weymouth, Mass.). St. John's scored one more run in the ninth and had two runners on when Thomson ripped a Ryan Morgan (Weymouth, Mass.) pitch that was snagged by Preziosi to end the game.
Matt O'Donnell (Marlboro, Mass.) gave up three runs in six and one-third innings to improve his record to 4-5. Morgan earned his fourth save of the year by retiring Thomson. St. John's starter Joe Reid (Rutherford, N.J.) drops to 6-5 with the loss.
