Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Behind a complete-game effort from starter Kevin Shepard, the Eagles defeated Virginia Tech by a 3-2 score at Shea Field. Ryan Leahy and Ryan Morgan chipped in two hits apiece for the Eagles. Sheperd just barely outdueled Hokie starter Jeff Landing, who turned in a complete game of his own, allowing only one earned run. Each starter allowed seven hits.
After the Hokies loaded the bases with nobody out in the second, Shepard got a 6-4-3 double play and then a strikeout, getting out of the jam and allowing only one run. The Eagles got to Landing in the third, manufacturing a run with two outs. Drew Locke, Ryan Leahy and Jason Delaney rattled off consecutive singles, with Locke scoring on Delaney's hit. Leahy was thrown out trying to advance to third, snuffing out any additional scoring chances, but the Eagles had tied the game.
The Eagles added two unearned runs in the fifth, with the help of a Virginia Tech throwing error and back-to-back sacrifice flies from Locke and Leahy.
The Hokies tightened things in the ninth when Wyatt Toregas led off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on David Londrey's single. Shepard got the next hitter to bounce into a double play and the Eagles held on for the 3-2 victory.
BC and Virginia Tech will play a doubleheader tomorrow at Shea Field with the first game set to begin at noon. The Eagles will send junior Chris Lambert to the hill in the first game.
