Baseball Sweeps Villanova

The Boston College baseball team swept Villanova in a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader, Thursday, April 8th at the Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth, winning game one by an 8-5 margin and prevailing 3-0 in the nightcap, a rain shortened game of 6.0 innings. With the day's two losses, the Wildcats fell to 18-10-1 overall on the season and 3-5 in the Big East. The Eagles improved to 11-16 overall and 3-2 in conference action.
Game One:
Game one pitted two of the BIG EAST's best pitchers facing off against one another in Boston College's Chris Lambert and Villanova's Nick Allen.
The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning off of Allen. BC rightfielder Eric Wright(Southboro, Mass.) gave the Eagles their first lead of the game, hammering a two-run double to left-center field.
In the top of the fourth inning, Boston College added to its lead, scoring once more to extend the margin to 3-0. Third baseman Marco Albano (Arlington, Mass.) plated centerfielder Drew Locke (Weymouth, Mass.) with an RBI single up the middle.
Villanova cut into the Eagles' lead in the bottom of the sixth inning against Lambert. With runners at first and second and one out, catcher Jim Gillin doubled down the left field to score Danny Poydenis and trim the BC lead to 3-1.
Boston College broke the game open in the top of the seventh inning, tallying five more runs to increase its lead to 8-1. Leftfielder Jason Delaney (Hanson, Mass.) recorded a two-run single in the inning for the Eagles, and designated hitter Garrett Greer (Peabody, Mass.) capped off the scoring with a two-run home run to left.
BC appeared to be on its way to an easy win, but the Wildcats had other ideas. The `Cats loaded the bases with one out against Eagles' reliever Mike Gauthier (Salem, Mass.) in the seventh. First baseman Adrian Schau doubled down the left field line to score all three runners and cut the deficit to 8-4. Pinch hitter Alex Bardeguez added an RBI single later in the inning to make it an 8-5 game. With runners at first and second and one out, BC reliever Ryan Morgan got Craig Mirsky to ground into the game-ending 4-6-3 double play as the Eagles prevailed 8-5.
Lambert (2-3) got the win on the mound for BC, allowing one run on five hits in six innings, striking out eight and walking three. Morgan pitched the final two-thirds innings of the game to earn the save. Taking the loss for Villanova was Allen, who gave up eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits in seven innings, striking out five and walking two.
At the plate for the `Cats, third baseman Angelo Petracca went three for four, while Schau was one-for-two with a double and three RBI, and Gillin was one-for-three with a double and one RBI. For BC, Wright, Delaney and Greer each had two RBI apiece.
Game Two:
The Eagles struck early once again in game two. Boston College scored twice in the top of the first inning against Villanova freshman hurler Mike Loree . Morgan had an RBI double to open up the scoring for Boston College, and Locke followed with an RBI groundout to increase the lead to 2-0.
In the top of the second inning, the Eagles scored once more on an RBI single by shortstop Ryan Leahy (Salem, Mass.) to up their lead to 3-0.
Boston College lefthander Kevin Shepard (Andover, Mass.) took over from there, keeping the Wildcat offense off-balance all afternoon. Shepard struck out six in six scoreless innings of work, and Villanova left five runners on base to keep the game at 3-0.
The Eagles scored four more times in the top of the seventh inning, but the game was called in the bottom of the seventh due to rain. The game thus reverted back to the last full inning with Boston College taking the 3-0 victory.
Shepard (3-3) earned the win on the mound for BC, while Loree (4-1) took his first loss of the season.
The Eagles travel to South Bend, Ind. to play Notre Dame on Saturday, April 10. Game time is 12 noon.
